It does not appear in the photography guides. It is not where the luxury lodges are. It is Damaraland’s administrative capital: a small, functional desert town of fuel stations, a government clinic, a few guesthouses, and a rest camp. And for self-drive visitors planning a central Damaraland circuit, it is one of the most strategically useful places to spend the night in the entire region.

The key is understanding what Khorixas is for: not a destination in itself but a hub from which an impressive radius of Damaraland’s greatest sites are reachable in single day trips. Twyfelfontein in Damaraland is 90 minutes away. The Versteinerter Wald is 40 minutes. Vingerklip is 70km east. The Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain are in the same direction as Twyfelfontein. Palmwag is 200km west on the C35. All of these from a base that costs a fraction of what the sites’ own lodges charge.

What’s in Khorixas

Fuel: Two fuel stations; generally reliable. Fill up here before heading west toward Palmwag or south toward Uis.

Supermarket: A small supermarket and a general supply store. Suitable for stocking up on self-catering basics: water, tinned food, bread, fruit. Not a full-range supermarket; for a broader selection, stock up in Outjo or Kamanjab before arriving.

Clinic: A government clinic providing basic medical care. Not a hospital; serious medical issues require evacuation to Windhoek.

ATM: Limited banking availability. An ATM is present but not consistently reliable. Carry sufficient cash from Windhoek.

Craft market: A small community craft market selling Damara jewellery, woven goods, and local artwork. Worth 20 minutes and a purchase.

Unterkünfte

Khorixas Rest Camp: The main accommodation option and the most practical for self-drive visitors. Camping pitches with ablutions and electricity, plus a number of basic bungalows for those not camping. The price is low, the location is central, and the simplicity is the point.

Khorixas Lodge: A slightly more comfortable lodge option on the edge of town, with a restaurant and a small swimming pool. Suitable for those wanting a little more comfort than the rest camp offers.

Huab Lodge (approximately 20km from Khorixas): The most comfortable option in the Khorixas area, positioned on the Huab River with its own wildlife access and a genuinely hospitable atmosphere. Described in detail in the lodge guide.

Day Trips from Khorixas

Petrified Forest (40 minutes)

The most accessible major site from Khorixas. A morning visit to the Versteinerter Wald with a guided walk (45 to 90 minutes) can be combined with Vingerklip in the same day.

Vingerklip (70km east, 50 minutes)

Die isolated dolomite pillar is in the opposite direction from Twyfelfontein but easily combined with the Petrified Forest in a single eastern day trip. Allow 90 minutes at Vingerklip including the walk to the base.

Twyfelfontein, Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain (90 minutes)

The core central Damaraland circuit in a single day. Depart at 05:30 for sunrise at the Organ Pipes, Burnt Mountain by 07:30, Twyfelfontein in Damaraland guided tour from 09:00 (two hours). Return to Khorixas by mid-afternoon. A long day but fully achievable.

Aba-Huab River Elephant Track (90 minutes one way)

An optional add-on to the Twyfelfontein day, driving the Aba-Huab riverbed track in the late afternoon for desert elephant sightings before returning to Khorixas.

Birdwatching Around Khorixas

Khorixas and its surroundings, particularly the Huab River valley accessed via Huab Lodge, are among the best birding areas in Damaraland for Namibian endemics. Monteiro’s hornbill, white-tailed shrike, and bare-cheeked babbler are all reliably found in the acacia-mopane scrub around town. The birdwatching guide covers the full list of species and the best locations in the Khorixas area.

Getting to Khorixas

From Windhoek: B1 north to Otjiwarongo (approximately 250km, 2.5 hours), then C38 west to Outjo (50km), then C35 west to Khorixas (approximately 150km, 1.5 to 2 hours). Total: approximately 450km, 5 to 6 hours.

From Kamanjab: C35 east to Khorixas, approximately 115km, 1.5 hours.

From Outjo: C35 west, approximately 150km, 1.5 to 2 hours.

Using Khorixas in a Wider Itinerary

Khorixas features in several of the Damaraland itineraries as either a first-night stop from Windhoek or a central base for a 2 to 3 day exploration of the central rock art and geological circuit. The self-drive guide covers the routing options in detail.

Khorixas does not make the highlights list.
