Temperatures are comfortable, skies are clear and the trail is in good condition. If you have flexibility, June and July are the sweet spot.

November to February should be avoided if possible. Temperatures in the Tsisab Ravine regularly exceed 40°C by mid-morning and the heat is genuinely dangerous without very early starts.

Why Timing Matters More at the Brandberg

The Brandberg sits in one of Namibia’s most arid and thermally extreme regions. The surrounding plains trap heat, and the Tsisab Ravine, while shaded, functions as a channel that concentrates warm air as the day progresses. There is no water on the trail and no shelter beyond the painted overhang itself. Timing your visit correctly is not about comfort alone.

Month by Month

Januar und Februar The peak of summer. Temperatures can exceed 42°C in the ravine by 11am. Some rain falls in the broader region but the Brandberg itself receives very little. Walking conditions are hazardous for unprepared visitors. If visiting during this period, a 6am start is the minimum. Not recommended.

March Temperatures begin to ease slightly but remain extreme. The end of the regional wet season means there can be intermittent cloud, which slightly moderates conditions. Still not an ideal time. A very early start is essential.

April Conditions improve noticeably through the month. By late April, daytime highs in the ravine are typically in the low 30s. An early morning start remains important but the walk becomes considerably more manageable. A reasonable time for those with no other options.

Mai The beginning of the comfortable season. Temperatures drop into the mid to high 20s by day and nights become genuinely cool. Skies are clear and visibility across the surrounding plains is excellent. The trail is dry and in good condition. Recommended.

Juni Excellent. Daytime temperatures in the ravine sit between 22°C and 27°C. Morning starts from 8am are comfortable. Nights are cold, dropping to around 5°C to 10°C at the rest camp. This is peak season and visitor numbers are at their highest, though the site never feels crowded.

Juli Essentially identical to June. Cold nights, clear days, ideal conditions. The best month overall for combining the White Lady hike with other Damaraland activities.

August Still excellent. Temperatures begin to climb slightly toward the end of the month but remain well within comfortable range for most of the day. One of the better months for photography as the light becomes warmer and slightly softer than in the midwinter months.

September The beginning of the warming trend. Daytime highs push into the low to mid 30s by late September. Early morning starts become more important again. Still a good time to visit with appropriate preparation. Spring wildflowers appear in the broader landscape.

Oktober Temperatures rise sharply. The ravine can reach 38°C by midday. A 7am start is strongly recommended. Avoid midday hiking entirely. The landscape is dry and dusty but the clear air and dramatic light make for excellent photography in the early hours.

November und Dezember The start of the dangerous heat period. See January and February notes above. A 6am start or earlier is necessary. Not recommended for general visitors.

Crowds and Visitor Numbers

The Brandberg White Lady is Namibia’s most visited rock art site but visitor numbers remain modest compared to major sites elsewhere in Africa. Even in peak season (June and July), you are unlikely to share the Maack Shelter with more than a handful of other visitors. The guide rotation system at the car park means groups are naturally staggered.

Combining with Other Destinations

The Brandberg is most commonly visited as part of a broader Damaraland itinerary. Twyfelfontein in Damaraland is around 150 kilometres to the northwest and shares the same optimal visiting season. Swakopmund, approximately 275 kilometres to the southwest, is a common base for a Brandberg day trip or overnight, though this is a long drive. The how to get to Brandberg guide covers route options from each direction.

For everything else needed to plan the visit, the White Lady complete guide is the starting point.

The Short Answer May to August is the best time to visit.
