The C34 north of Swakopmund is one of Namibia’s most atmospheric coastal drives. Tar road from Swakopmund to Henties Bay; good gravel from there to the Ugab River Skeleton Coast Park gate; gravel throughout the park to Terrace Bay. The drive from Swakopmund to Terrace Bay covers 280km and passes through three different coastal environments: the fog desert of the central Namib coast, the Cape Cross seal colony, and the remote fishing outpost country of the southern Skeleton Coast National Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henties Bay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first significant town north of Swakopmund; 70km on tar. A small fishing and holiday town with fuel, a basic supermarket, and the last reliable ATM before Terrace Bay. Stop here for fuel and supplies regardless of your fuel state; the C34 north of Henties Bay has nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ugab River Gate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Ugab River mouth marks the northern boundary of free-access coastal driving and the entry to the Skeleton Coast National Park’s southern section. NWR entry fees are payable here. Gate hours follow the standard sunrise to sunset pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Torra Bay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A seasonal NWR fishing camp, open only December to January. Camping pitches and basic facilities when open. The beach fishing (primarily kob and steenbras) is the draw; the setting is typical remote Skeleton Coast: flat, foggy, windswept, and distinctly beautiful in the specific way that extreme environments are beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terrace Bay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The northernmost self-drive point on the Skeleton Coast: an NWR fishing resort with chalets, a restaurant, and a fuel pump, 280km north of Swakopmund. Beyond Terrace Bay, the road ends. The northern wilderness begins. No private vehicle may proceed further without a specific permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
