A recommended overnight in Maltahöhe or at a farm accommodation on the D826 south of Maltahöhe breaks the drive into two comfortable sections.

The Maltahöhe Stop

Maltahöhe is 190km from Sesriem on good gravel. The Maltahöhe Hotel is a classic small-town Namibia establishment: simple, clean, and with the characteristic character of a southern Namibia agricultural town. From Maltahöhe, the D826 south toward Bethanien and the C14 north toward Gibeon provide alternative routing that avoids backtracking.

Duwisib Castle (30km detour from Maltahöhe): A fully furnished German colonial baronial castle built in 1908 in the middle of the Namibian desert; now managed by NWR as a historic monument. An extraordinary detour for anyone interested in the colonial history or simply the absurdity of a European castle in this landscape.

What to Expect on the Drive

The terrain south of Maltahöhe changes character. The Namib’s pale gravel gives way to orange and red escarpment rock; the vegetation shifts from sparse desert plants to a succulents-rich landscape with Euphorbia species and aloes. The Giants’ Playground near Keetmanshoop is visible from the B1 approach; the Quivertree Forest (14km east) is the last significant stop before Hobas.

Reciprocal guide: Sossusvlei to Fish River Canyon

The drive from Sossusvlei to Fish River Canyon covers 530km of southern Namibia through terrain that most visitors never see: the orange escarpment country south of Maltahöhe, the transition from the Namib Desert to the arid succulents of the southern desert, and the approach to the canyon through increasingly dramatic rocky landscape.
