The rim road from Hobas is 2WD passable; the approach roads from Keetmanshoop and from the South African border are tar and good gravel; and the canyon itself (for hikers on the trail) requires no vehicle on the floor.

The Hobas Rim Road

From Hobas camp, a 10km gravel rim road leads to the main viewpoint. 2WD accessible in dry conditions; the surface is maintained regularly. Secondary viewpoints are signposted along the rim road. No exit from vehicles except at designated viewpoints; the canyon edge is unfenced.

The Road Between Hobas and Ai-Ais

The direct route from Hobas to Ai-Ais is 240km via the C37 and B4. This is the only road connection; there is no direct road between the two ends of the canyon (the canyon itself is the only direct route, for hikers).

Road condition: The C37 from Hobas to Grünau is gravel, well-maintained, 2WD accessible.
