The permanent exhibition is strong on the SWAPO liberation struggle and the independence process; weaker on the earlier colonial period and the genocide. The building (completed 2014, designed with North Korean assistance) is visually bold in a Soviet-influenced way that sits oddly in the colonial streetscape. Allow 2 hours.

Ort: Robert Mugabe Avenue, opposite the Christuskirche. Entry: Small admission fee.

National Museum of Namibia (Owela Museum)

A smaller, more natural-history-focused museum in the Owela building in the city centre. The collection covers Namibian geology, flora, fauna, and ethnography. More approachable in scale than the Independence Museum; the natural history section is useful context for visitors about to head into the Namibian landscape.

Ort: Robert Mugabe Avenue. Entry: Small admission fee.

Alte Feste Historical Museum

In the 1890 colonial fort; the collection covers the colonial military history of the German Schutztruppe, with some coverage of the Herero and Nama resistance and the 1904 genocide. The building itself is a significant attraction; the museum fills in the historical context.

Ort: Robert Mugabe Avenue, near the Reiterdenkmal. Entry: Small admission fee.

Which to Prioritise

If visiting only one: the Independence Museum gives the broadest coverage of Namibian history. The Alte Feste adds the most specifically to a visit to the Waterberg Plateau. The Owela Museum is best for natural history context before a wildlife-focused circuit.

Independence Museum The largest and most prominent museum in Windhoek; covers Namibian history from pre-colonial times through to independence and beyond.
