The plateau vegetation thins as the dry season progresses; animals are more easily seen in the open grassland and around the waterholes. White rhino, roan, sable, and tsessebe are most visible July to October.

Hiking conditions: The wilderness trail is most comfortable in the dry season. Temperatures are moderate (15 to 28°C daytime); no afternoon rain interrupts the hiking programme; the plateau tracks are firm and well-defined.

June and July: Cool nights (approaching 5°C on the plateau); warm days. The optimal hiking window.

Regenzeit (November bis April)

Vegetation: The plateau transforms in the rains. The red sandstone against green grass and full-canopied trees is visually striking. Photography of the landscape at its most lush.

Wildlife: Animals are more dispersed across the plateau when water is available everywhere; viewing requires more effort.

Wandern: Afternoon thunderstorms are typical; the wilderness trail can be slippery after rain. The trail is not closed in the wet season but is less comfortable.

Summary

Any time is worthwhile. The dry season (June to September) is optimal for wildlife and hiking. The wet season is optimal for landscape photography and the experience of the plateau at its most dramatic.

The Waterberg rewards visits in any season, but the character of the experience changes significantly between the dry and wet seasons.
