From the plateau rim, the savannah extends in every direction to the horizon; the flat top holds grassland, woodland, and cliff habitats that support species impossible in the surrounding lowlands. Below, the Bernabé de la Bat rest camp sits in the shade of the fig trees that grow along the base of the escarpment.

The Waterberg is 340km north of Windhoek and 65km east of Otjiwarongo. It is, by any reasonable assessment, one of the most undervisited major wildlife destinations in Namibia. The reasons are partly historical, it opened to the public relatively recently after serving as a game capture station, and partly structural, sitting off the main tourist route between Windhoek, Etosha, and the coast. Visitors who include it in their itinerary almost invariably consider it a highlight.

Key species: White rhino (walking encounters); roan antelope; sable antelope; tsessebe; giraffe; leopard; buffalo Key activities: Multi-day guided wilderness trail; day hikes; guided walking with rhino; vehicle game drives Geology: Etjo sandstone plateau; Triassic period; approximately 200 million years old History: Site of the Battle of Waterberg, 1904 (the Herero and Nama Genocide)

White Rhino on Foot

One of the specific attractions of the Waterberg that no other accessible Namibia park can replicate: the guided walking encounters with white rhino. The plateau’s white rhino population is well-established and the animals are habituated to the presence of guided walking groups. An experienced NWR guide takes a group onto the plateau, finds the rhino by tracking, and approaches on foot to a responsible viewing distance. This is one of the finest rhino experiences in Namibia.

Full guide: Walking with rhino

The Wilderness Trail

The Waterberg Wilderness Trail is a 4-day guided hiking trail on the plateau. It is one of Namibia’s lesser-known multi-day hikes and one of its most rewarding: the plateau terrain, the wildlife encounters, and the specific guided depth available from experienced NWR guides make it a genuinely excellent walking experience.

Full guide: Wilderness trail

The History

The Battle of Waterberg in August 1904 is one of the most significant and most tragic events in Namibian history. German colonial forces under General Lothar von Trotha surrounded a Herero force and their families at Waterberg, defeated them in a set-piece engagement, and then drove the survivors into the Omaheke Desert in what became the first genocide of the 20th century.

The Waterberg carries this history alongside its wildlife; responsible visitors engage with both.
