There are no lodges in the Marienfluss Valley, no camps in the Hartmann Valley, and nothing between community sites on the approach tracks. The camping is the experience; the accommodation is the point.

Community Campsites

The community campsites operated by Himba families in the Marienfluss and on approach tracks are the correct accommodation model for the interior. They provide:

A designated location with some level of cleared ground

A basic toilet (pit latrine in most cases)

Fire ring

Access to a community member who can provide local information

The fee per night (typically NAD 100 to 200) goes directly to the family managing the site. In a region where the primary economic activities are herding and craft sales, campsite income is meaningful.

Key community sites: Okahirongo Elephant Lodge (southern Kaokoland; private); Marienfluss community sites in the valley floor; Epupa Falls community campsite.

Wild Camping Protocols

In communal land (which most of Kaokoland is), wild camping outside designated community sites is technically inappropriate without seeking permission from the relevant community. The practical reality in very remote areas is that this permission is not always possible to obtain; in such cases, leave no trace and minimise the footprint.

Fire protocol: Dead wood only; keep fires small; fully extinguish before sleeping or departing. Fire risk in the dry season is significant.

Equipment

Everything required for comfortable camping must be brought from Opuwo. No hire equipment is available in the interior. See the packing list for the full specification.

Camping is how you experience the Kaokoland interior.
