Tracks that were impassable during the wet season have dried out but are still well-defined. Temperatures are comfortable (15 to 30°C daytime). The landscape is at its most visually rich: the Hartmann grass in the Marienfluss is still gold-green from the wet season moisture.

July to August: Peak season. Tracks are at their driest and most stable. Wildlife concentrates at reliable water sources. The Kunene River at Epupa is at its lowest flow but the swimming pools are at their clearest. The Marienfluss circuit is most predictably passable in this window.

September to October: Temperatures rising (30 to 38°C); the landscape becomes drier and dustier. Wildlife sightings are often good as animals concentrate at remaining water. The tracks remain passable but the heat makes midday travel uncomfortable.

Regenzeit: November bis April

The Kaokoland interior receives unpredictable rainfall between November and April. Rainfall events (driven by the Angolan monsoon) can make tracks impassable, dry riverbeds dangerous to cross, and the Marienfluss access routes temporarily closed.

What the wet season offers: The Marienfluss is most visually spectacular when the Hartmann grass is actively growing and green. The Kunene River at Epupa runs at its highest volume; the falls are most dramatic. The landscape is transformed by the rain.

What the wet season prevents: Reliable access to the Marienfluss and Hartmann Valley circuits. Track conditions are genuinely unpredictable; even experienced operators check daily.

For Epupa Falls Specifically

Epupa is accessible year-round; the C43 from Opuwo is passable in dry conditions in most years. The falls are most dramatic at highest water (February to April); the swimming pools are most usable at lower water (July to October).

Dry Season: May to October The optimal window for most Kaokoland travel.
