The pass drops approximately 600 metres through a series of switchbacks, boulder fields, and exposed ledges on the western escarpment of the plateau. The Marienfluss Valley is visible throughout the descent, you can see where you are going for the entire route, which makes the process simultaneously spectacular and concentrated.

The Technical Character

One-way: The descent is one-way only. The track runs from east to west (plateau to valley). Do not attempt to ascend Van Zyl’s Pass; the track is not designed for upward vehicle movement and the attempt has damaged and stranded vehicles.

Vehicle requirements: A stock 4×4 with short wheelbase is preferred; long-wheelbase vehicles (double-cab bakkies over a certain wheelbase length) struggle on the tighter switchbacks. A vehicle in good mechanical condition with properly inflated tyres, functioning diff locks, and a driver who understands low-range gear selection.

Minimum group: Two vehicles. Never attempt Van Zyl’s Pass alone. A recovery vehicle and recovery equipment are essential.

Experience level: This pass is not an introduction to Kaokoland 4×4 driving. Drivers who have not done significant off-road work in Namibia should approach it with a guide or after accumulating experience on the approach tracks.

The Descent

Section 1 (Upper): The plateau track narrows and the surface becomes increasingly rocky. The first views of the Marienfluss appear ahead. Low range, second gear.

Section 2 (Middle): The switchbacks begin. Several require a three-point turn to negotiate cleanly; some require spotting (one person out of the vehicle guiding the driver). The exposure is significant, the valley floor is visible several hundred metres below on the outside of the switchbacks.

Section 3 (Lower): The track reaches the valley floor through a final boulder section. The relief of having completed the descent is a specific and genuine pleasure.

After the Pass

The valley floor of the Marienfluss opens up immediately below the pass exit. The community campsite at the base of the pass is the natural first stop; the descent typically takes 2 to 4 hours depending on vehicle and driver experience.

Full valley guide: Marienfluss Valley The circuit guide covering approach, descent, and departure: Marienfluss circuit

Van Zyl’s Pass is a one-way descent from the Otjihipa Mountains plateau into the Marienfluss Valley, covering approximately 15km of the most technically demanding 4×4 track in Namibia.
