One is the world’s oldest desert at its most dramatic; the other is one of Africa’s great wildlife destinations. Together, in a ten to fourteen-day programme, they cover most of what draws visitors to Namibia.

Die Route

Sossusvlei to Etosha (Anderson Gate): 750km; allow two driving days

The drive is too long to do comfortably in a single day. The standard approach is to break it in Windhoek with an overnight, using the capital as a rest and resupply stop.

Day 1: Sesriem Gate → C19 north → Solitaire → C14 north → B1 north → Windhoek (360km, 4.5 hours). Windhoek overnight; resupply; vehicle fuel.

Day 2: Windhoek → B1 north → Otjiwarongo → Outjo → C38 → Anderson Gate → Okaukuejo (440km, 5 hours).

Sequencing: Which First?

Sossusvlei first: Depart Windhoek, drive south-west to Sesriem. After Sossusvlei, drive north through Windhoek to Etosha. This sequence puts the landscape experience before the wildlife experience, which some visitors prefer as a build toward the wildlife concentration of the dry season.

Etosha first: Drive north from Windhoek to Etosha immediately. After Etosha, return south through Windhoek to Sossusvlei. This sequence delivers wildlife immediately and ends the trip on the landscape photography experience.

Neither is definitively better; the sequencing is primarily a function of flight arrival times, vehicle routing efficiency, and personal preference.

Adding Damaraland

The three-destination combination that makes the most complete Namibia circuit: Windhoek → Damaraland (3 nights) → Etosha (3 to 4 nights, entering via King Nehale Gate) → Windhoek overnight → Sossusvlei (2 nights) → Windhoek = 10 to 11 nights.

This routing avoids backtracking and covers the full range of Namibia’s flagship destinations.

Reciprocal Etosha guide: Etosha to Sossusvlei Contact Mat-Travel to plan the combined circuit.

Sossusvlei and Etosha together define the classic Namibia north-south circuit.
