They are the source of the Tsauchab River, the same river that carved Sesriem Canyon and floods Sossusvlei in exceptional years, and they hold permanent springs and water sources that support a fauna completely different from the surrounding Namib desert.

Most Sossusvlei visitors do not know the Naukluft Mountains exist. They are entirely absent from the mainstream dune-and-pan narrative. This is an oversight: the mountain ecosystem, the multi-day hiking trail, and the specific wildlife the mountains support make a dedicated visit worthwhile for anyone with hiking interest.

The Ecosystem

Permanent spring water in the Naukluft canyon supports riverine vegetation, fig trees, buffalo thorn, wild tamarisk, in a landscape otherwise defined by aridity. The canyon floor is shaded; the temperature is significantly cooler than the surrounding desert; and the combination of water, shade, and rocky terrain supports species absent from the dune area.

Klipspringer are frequently seen on the rocky outcrops above the canyon. Leopard are present and occasionally encountered on the hiking trail; track evidence is more common than sightings. Rock hyrax sun themselves on boulders throughout the mountain zone. Hartmann’s mountain zebra graze on the mountain grassland above the canyon. Verreaux’s eagle nest on the cliff faces and are regularly seen soaring above the ridgelines.

The Two Hiking Options

Naukluft Trail (120km, 8 days): One of Namibia’s most demanding and rewarding multi-day hiking trails, looping through the mountain terrain with daily hut-to-hut stages. The trail requires advance NWR booking, a minimum group of three, and a reasonable level of fitness. The landscape ranges from canyon floors to mountain plateaus; water sources are reliable. Available April to October only.

Olive Trail (17km loop, 1 day): A shorter option from the Naukluft campsite, covering rocky terrain and canyon passages accessible to day hikers. Named for the wild olive trees that grow in the shaded sections. No advance booking required; doable in 5 to 6 hours.

Praktische Notizen

Access: The Naukluft section of the park is entered from Sesriem on the D854 gravel road (approximately 60km north-east of Sesriem). 2WD accessible in dry conditions.

Unterkunft: NWR Naukluft campsite (basic; self-catering) is the only option in the mountain section. This is a remote NWR camp with limited facilities; bring all supplies.

Booking: The Naukluft Trail requires NWR advance booking (nwr.com.na). The Olive Trail requires only park entry payment.

Best season: May to September for hiking; avoid November to March (heat, flash flood risk in canyon).

Full trail guide: The Naukluft Hiking Trail

The Naukluft Mountains sit at the eastern edge of the Namib-Naukluft Park, a limestone massif rising sharply from the surrounding desert plains.
