The main park road closes to all visitors at sunset. But the gravel road to Elim Dune, 5km from the camp complex, remains accessible to guests staying inside the gate. The dune faces west; the late afternoon light on its western face, as the sun drops toward the Namib horizon, is excellent.

Day visitors cannot be here. Guests inside the gate, who spent their morning at Dune 45 and Deadvlei, can spend their late afternoon here in complete privacy.

The Dune

Elim Dune is smaller than Dune 45 and significantly smaller than Big Daddy, rising approximately 100 metres. The climb is shorter and less demanding; the view from the crest extends across the surrounding gravel plain and the lower dune margins to the west. The western face catches late afternoon light at an angle that produces shadow-and-highlight drama comparable to the eastern faces of the larger dunes at sunrise.

The surrounding terrain on the 5km drive from camp is productive for wildlife. Namaqua chameleon, oryx, and ostrich are all regularly seen on the road to Elim Dune. Drive slowly and watch the margins.

Praktische Notizen

Access: from Sesriem camp, follow the gravel road south-west (signposted Elim Dune)

Time needed: 2 hours including the drive and the climb

Best timing: arrive at the dune base 90 minutes before sunset

2WD accessible throughout

Not accessible to day visitors after park road closing

Elim Dune is a specific advantage of staying inside the Sesriem Gate, and it is rarely written about.
