The approach to the first significant dunes in the final 30km before Sesriem builds anticipation through the entire central Namib section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Die Route<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Swakopmund \u2192 C28\/C14 south \u2192 Solitaire \u2192 C19 west \u2192 Sesriem Gate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Total: 350km; approximately 4 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The C14 south from Swakopmund is good gravel throughout; well-maintained and passable by 2WD in dry conditions. The route passes through the Namib gravel plains with the distant Naukluft Mountains visible to the east from approximately 100km south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solitaire (approximately 250km from Swakopmund) is the essential fuel stop; fill completely here. Ancient Welwitschia plants (some over 1,500 years old) are found along a self-drive track from the C28; the permit is purchased at the gate. This adds time to the Sossusvlei drive but provides unique botanical context for the broader Namib ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arrival at Sossusvlei<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Arriving at Sesriem Gate by 14:00 or earlier allows a late afternoon visit to Sesriem Canyon (4km from the gate; 90 minutes) and the Elim Dune sunset session (5km from the Sesriem camp).
